A Note from the Forge

One Roof, Both Halves of the Hobby: What The Forge Actually Is

A game store should hand you three things: the product, the table and the people. The Forge was built to deliver all three at once, and 150+ Google reviewers have rated the results 4.9 stars.

The store opened December 3, 2021, founded by owner Sam Stilley with the late Dallas Collett, remembered by the community as the Forgemaster. The name describes the mission: people walk in as customers and get forged into regulars.

The Manifest

What’s In the Building:
Four Game Pillars and a Full Paint Wall

The shelves at this Houston game store cover miniature wargames, sealed trading card games, roleplaying games, board games and a complete hobby section. Here is the honest tour, aisle by aisle.

Warhammer holds the deepest shelf space in the store. Every current Games Workshop system is stocked and played here, and staff play the games they sell.

The Games Workshop lineup on the shelves

Warhammer 40K, Age of Sigmar, Kill Team, Necromunda, Horus Heresy and The Old World are all in stock and on tables. Current-production Games Workshop kits can usually be ordered when a shelf runs dry, subject to Games Workshop’s own supply; expert kits are not available, and staff will say so straight.

The rest of the wargaming wall

Beyond the grimdark, the store stocks Marvel Crisis Protocol, Star Wars Shatterpoint, Star Wars Legion, X-Wing, BattleTech, Warmachine, Bolt Action, Conquest: TLAOK, Halo: Flashpoint, and Team Yankee and Flames of War. Whatever system your crew plays, there is a table with terrain already on it.

“First time in the place was today. Very friendly atmosphere. Plenty of tables to game at and they had all the warhammer stuff I could want. Excellent customer service too and I’ll be joining them in their Warhammer classes!”
— Sean Scott, Google review

The card wall is sealed product only, covering Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon TCG, One Piece TCG, Flesh and Blood, Gundam TCG, Star Wars Unlimited and Riftbound. The store has supported Riftbound since its October 2025 launch, among the first shops in Houston to run it from day one.

Accessories live one peg over: TCG supplies, sleeves, deck boxes, playmats, and binders, with Dragon Shield and Ultra Pro as the sleeve brands carried. No singles cases, no bulk bins; the wall is boosters, bundles and precons.

The RPG shelves carry D&D, Pathfinder, Shadowdark, Dungeon Crawl Classics and Warhammer Fantasy, backed by two private RPG rooms. Campaigns book the rooms through Square up to 4 weeks out, and demo sets are available for room use.

Session Zero Nights

Session Zero nights are the store’s front door into roleplaying: two DMs present rotating systems, usually D&D plus one other, and attendees get first dibs on that DM’s next one-shot.

The board game selection runs from gateway staples to Twilight Imperium, which sits on the shelf as regular stock. Friday nights the open tables turn into player-led board game territory, where groups form organically and solo walk-ins get absorbed fast.

One aisle over from the games, the paint wall carries Citadel, Vallejo, AK Interactive, Army Painter and Pro Acryl, plus Two Thin Coats wave 1. Brushes, sprue cutters, plastic glue, bases and battle mats round out the hobby section, and the paint station gives it all a place to happen.

“The Forge has the best paint selection for 100 miles, that’s why we drive an hour to get there.”
— Michael Powell, Google review

Events 7 Nights a Week: The Standing Calendar

The Forge runs events every night of the week, and tickets go through Square so your seat is locked before you drive. This is the rhythm regulars build their weeks around.

Night What’s Running
Monday Open miniature gaming across the hall
Tuesday AMG Tuesdays: Star Wars Shatterpoint, Marvel Crisis Protocol and more
Wednesday Open play and league nights
Thursday Warlord Games Thursdays, the store’s biggest Thursday following
Friday Friday Night Magic and Commander pods, plus player-led board games
Saturday Pokémon TCG at 6 PM with Professor Bryan, certified Pokémon judge
Sunday Open gaming and occasional miniature events

The Marquee Saturdays

Competitive Warhammer 40K RTTs land on the 2nd Saturday of each month, and Horus Heresy runs monthly on the 3rd Saturday. Both draw players from across Greater Houston, and both sell tickets through Square ahead of time.

Commander Rules Friday Night

The Magic: The Gathering community here is roughly 99 percent Commander. Friday Night Magic anchors the evening, pods run deep, and the sealed wall keeps precons and boosters within arm’s reach of the tables.

Pokémon Saturdays and Pre-Release Weekends

Pokémon TCG runs Saturday nights at 6 PM with Professor Bryan, certified Pokémon judge, and the store hosts Pokémon pre-release events when new sets drop. It is the most beginner-friendly ticket in the building, and it shares the day with Saturday’s new-release morning.

The Stronghold

Inside The Stronghold: The Space Families and Veterans Share

The play hall, nicknamed The Stronghold, looks like it was lifted from a fantasy novel and plays like a tournament venue. Gear up with twenty-plus tables, medieval theming, mountains of free-to-use in-store terrain, a dedicated paint station, and two private RPG rooms behind their own doors.

The ground rules, stated plainly: open-play tables are walk-in and cannot be reserved. Private rooms and event seats book exclusively through Square, and the terrain stays in the store. Bring your models, decks, and dice; the battlefield is provided.

“We absolutely love The Forge! Our son has taken up Warhammer within the last year & this store has been our go to all things Warhammer 40k! The staff is so helpful with any questions our son has. Not to mention the community that has been built there. Highly recommend checking it out!”

Never Played? This Is the Easiest Store in Houston to Start At

First-timers get a one-on-one, staff-led demo at the front table using small store demo sets, available for most games in the building. From there, the Learning Center runs learn-to-play sessions and paint-and-take workshops, and Session Zero opens the RPG door.

The culture backs the programming. Staff are known by name in the store’s reviews, and the community’s Discord hums between visits with pickup games and painting advice. One note for planners: Discord is the community hub, while all bookings and tickets run through Square.

“Amazing place! I recently got into D&D and stopped by to see what they had. Michael was incredibly helpful and welcoming. He took time to answer all my questions and gave recommendations on what I could use when I want to start painting figurines. I stuck my head into the playing room, and everyone there was so kind and willing to say hello.”
